Joseph Mallord William Turner Inscriptions by Turner c.1812

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 5 Verso:
Inscriptions by Turner circa 1812
D06624
Turner Bequest CI 5a
Inscribed by Turner in pencil (see main catalogue entry) on white wove paper, 180 x 107 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner’s inscriptions, hurriedly written, read:
16 Feet – wanting 5 Inches
 8 Feet – w       1
13 F.             9
 6 F.             10
These dimensions are similar to those written, more tidily, in ink on a small piece of paper now attached to the inner front cover of the sketchbook. See Introduction to the book for the suggestion that these notes relate to Turner’s architectural project for Sandycombe Lodge at Twickenham, probably under construction during 1812.
