See comment to folios 11, 12 and 13 of the sketchbook (D06195, D06196, D06197), depicting Isleworth riverside scenery of which this is a further variation. With folio 11 it is described by Wilkinson as ‘classical with a faint air of Twickenham’. A pencil annotation by Edward Croft-Murray in a copy of Finberg in Tate’s Library observes it to be ‘Almost the original scene’, presumably also a reference to 11 that begins the sequence. However in its composition and classical treatment with pseudo-antique boats on the river it is closest to 13. As in all of these variations, Robert Mylne’s Pavilion in Syon Park takes centre stage.
