Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner’s inscription in the upper corner lists items to take on a sketching and fishing trip: ‘Varnish | Razor | Blue Black | B[urn]t Sienna | Fishing Rod. Flies | Pallet Knife | Shoes’. Hill supposes that these provisions were for a trip along the Thames. For the Executors’ endorsements, see Introduction to the sketchbook. The sketch is the second of three very slight views of Windsor Castle from the river, the others being inside the cover and on folio 2 (D40632, D05768).
