See notes to folio 59 recto and verso (D17156, D40625) for the restoration of this leaf to the sketchbook following return from the touring Third Loan Collection.1 D40625 has a slight sketch of trees, extending this view to the left. The paper is discoloured from exposure and the sketch faint and rubbed. The subject has some resemblance to Turner’s views of the Lune valley near Hornby Castle and Tatham bridge (for example Tate D11511; Turner Bequest CXLVII 41a), but this may be coincidental and there is no certain evidence that he visited the area in 1808.
