Robert Bevan visited Tangier in Morocco over the period of 1892–3. There he met the British artists George Denholm Armour (1864–1949) and Joseph Crawhall (1861–1913), shown on either side of Bevan in this photograph. According to Armour, writing to Bevan’s son in 1936, ‘we all then spent much more time on sport of various kinds than on painting’ (TGA 9210/1/5). In his reminiscences Armour wrote that this photograph shows Bevan on a little horse called Bootles’ Baby and Crawhall on a horse called Dan Dancer.
