Inverted relative to sketchbook’s foliation, this rough study appears to depict the view from a loggia interior, looking outwards from under the arches towards distant trees and buildings. A single column appears in the foreground, a section of balustrading is indicated to the right, and stairs are outlined to the left. In the top-left corner is a minor study of a building. Turner’s geographical location is unclear, although he was possibly sketching in Milan or Turin.
