D14834
Turner Bequest CLXXVIII 1a

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner appears to have torn off part of this page before proceeding to sketch a church on the remnant, turning the sketchbook vertically. Finberg’s 1909 Inventory of the Bequest provisionally identifies the building as the Church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti in Rome, overlooking the Spanish Steps and the Piazza di Spagna.1 However, the cursory lines make a precise identification difficult to confirm.

Technical notes:
The remnant of the torn-out page is uneven, extending to a maximum height of 40 mm. It has been made good with modern laid paper, increasing the height to 132 mm to match the sketchbook’s intact leaves.
