In the top-right corner of this page is the belltower of the Cathedral of San Pietro, located on Via dell’lndipendenza in central Bologna. As noted by Cecilia Powell, Turner’s vantage point appears to be from the Piazza del Nettuno, looking north-east towards the domed belltower, which is largely obscured by other buildings.1 The remainder of the page features several rough outlines of buildings, possibly in Bologna, which are inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation.
See under folio 16 verso (D14861) for a list of additional views of Bologna in this sketchbook and from Turner’s first major Italian tour of 1819–20.
