Folio 11 Verso:
The Apennine Mountains near ?Foligno 1829
D14852
Turner Bequest CLXXVIII 11a
Pencil on white laid paper, 132 x 97 mm
Inscribed in pencil by Turner ‘[?Col]’ and ‘[?Foligno]’ towards top right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner used the upper section of the page to depict the mountainous topography of the Apennines in Umbria, with buildings spreading across the slopes. A precise location is difficult to pinpoint, although Turner’s top-right inscription may refer to ‘Foligno’, a town in Perugia, whereas the ‘Col’ to the left possibly refers to Colle San Lorenzo, a neighbouring village and mountain peak. The meaning of the row of dots to the left is unclear.
