Turner’s left inscription ‘St Casano | Flor’ is presumably a reference to San Casciano in Val di Pesa. He passed this Tuscan village, located around ten miles south-west of Florence, as he journeyed towards Siena. The dominant study, executed with the sketchbook turned horizontally, offers a distant view of San Casciano in its dramatic topographical surroundings. The cross in the top-right corner may denote a windmill. Two minor studies of buildings appear towards the bottom. San Casciano is also identified as the subject of the verso (D21595).
