Turner travelled through Lodi in the second week of January 1829, as he journeyed north-west towards Milan, Turin and the Alps beyond. This slight study depicts ramparts and an arched gateway at one of the city’s historic entrances. It is possibly the now-demolished Porta Milano on the road to Milan, constructed in the 1780s and known in Turner’s day as the Porta Nuovo. He appears to be looking towards the historic centre, with towers and buildings protruding above the walls.
