The upper half of this page contains two rough sketches of mountainous landscapes with trees and buildings in the foreground. Both views are inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. Their cursory appearance indicates that Turner was sketching from a moving carriage, making rapid studies as the landscape changed around him. A location for the two views has not been conclusively identified, although they were possibly executed near Genoa, given the itinerary embodied by the sketchbook (see the Introduction), which begins in Genoa and ends near Livorno and Florence.
