Turner oriented the sketchbook horizontally to produce this rough outline of moored boats along the banks of a river or lake, with a single sailing vessel to the right and ramparts and buildings in the distance. The artist’s precise geographical location remains unclear, although he was presumably near the River Ticino or River Po, travelling westwards from Milan to Turin. This view likely relates to similar studies of moored boats on folios 1 verso and 2 recto, and the verso of the present leaf (D21665–D21666, D21669).
