The castle, with the State Apartments to the left and St George’s Chapel to the right, is seen from near the foot of Romney Lock Island. Although probably taken on a later occasion, the view is very similar to that in the Wey, Guildford sketchbook (Tate D06343–D06342: Turner Bequest XCVIII 129–128a) and closer still, especially in the disposition of the trees, to the oil sketch Windsor Castle from the River (Tate N02312). See also folio 2 of the present sketchbook (D06073). Foliage from the trees on the left of this sketch continues inside the front cover of the sketchbook (D40656).
