This is the right half of a double-page spread, drawn inverted in relation to the main sequence of sketches, continued from folio 17 recto (D11396) opposite. It is worth observing that the time on the church clock is ten minutes past one, and that the church appears to be roofless. To the right is the continuation of a drawing from another page, possibly folio 15 verso (D11393), but that is not certain.
The Yorkshire 1 sketchbook contains sketches of West Tanfield from upstream made on the same occasion: Tate D10949; Turner Bequest CXLIV 44a has detail sketches of the projecting window on the east face of the tower, the east side of the church tower and the east windows of the church, that relate to the present sketch, rather than to the sketches in that sketchbook.
