This sketch of the west portal of St Mary’s Abbey, York is continued to the right on folio 6 recto (D11379) to take in the west front of York Minster. Here Turner revisits a subject he had first sketched in 1797 in the Tweed and Lakes sketchbook (Tate D01073; Turner Bequest XXXV 71). See the Yorkshire 1 sketchbook (Tate D10913–D10914, D10917, D10920; Turner Bequest CXLIV 24a–25, 26a, 28a) for interior views of the west end of St Mary’s.
