Joseph Mallord William Turner ?Waves, or Figures 1802

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
First Flyleaf, Recto:
?Waves, or Figures 1802
D04190
Pencil on white laid paper, 112 x 187 mm
Stamped in black ‘LXXI’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg lists this as the second flyleaf, but it is now bound as the first. The white paper was not treated with any preparatory wash. The very perfunctory pencil marks here are difficult to make out. Finberg’s identification as waves does not seem certain and they could possibly represent figures in a boat, on shore or on a pier.
Verso:
Blank
