This is one of a large number of sketches on loose sheets of paper depicting hill towns, wooded scenery and rocky coastal terrain, here identified with Turner’s various tours of South of France and Italy. For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section introduction.
Verso:
The centre of the sheet bears the pencil note ‘103 | a’. Towards the bottom left-hand corner is the Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXCII – 31’ are stamped in black with the (incorrect) pencil note ‘D28977’. There are vestiges of white paper around the edges, presumably from an earlier mount. There are small dark blue and red spots of paint in the bottom left-hand corner of the sheet.
