These two swiftly rendered views show coastline, possibly at Portsmouth or Brighton. They are connected to sketches showing coastal and harbour scenes which reminded Turner of Claude Lorrain’s marine landscapes at sunrise (Tate D18327, D18329–D18330; Turner Bequest CCX 10a, 11a–12).
