Turner’s viewpoint for this sketch of St Peter’s and the Vatican must have been the wooded hill to the north-west of the complex. Beyond the ramparts built into the sloping ground can be seen the River Tiber and, in the far background, the distant line of mountains. Amongst the identifiable landmarks which Turner has included on the level of the horizon is the distinctive façade of the Villa Medici with its two towers.
The view continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 7 (D16169).
