Finberg’s tentative suggestion of Valle Crucis for both this and folio 23 (D06842; Turner Bequest CIII 13) is correct and establishes that Turner took the sketchbook with him on his tour into North Wales and the Dee Valley in 1808 (see Introduction).
Turner had already visited Valle Crucis during a Welsh tour in 1794, and made a finished watercolour of the subject (Tate D00703; Turner Bequest XXVIII R).
