Taken from higher in the hills than the previous sketch (Tate D20151; Turner Bequest CCXVIII 13), this view incorporates the narrow winding streets, rooftops and spire of Pallien’s church as well as the distant profile of Trier across the Moselle. Turner has taken care to record the small buildings and cottages which hug the craggy hillside, rendering the rest of the view rather cursorily. This view is similar to one in the Rivers Meuse and Moselle sketchbook (Tate D19730; Turner Bequest CCXVI 91).
