These two vigorous sketches, one above the other in narrow bands divided by a pencil line, depict trees over water, and the inscription ‘Isleworth’ indicates that they were made on a reach of the River Thames long familiar to Turner; see the sketchbook’s Introduction. Compare the view on folios 69 verso–70 recto (D18676–D18677).
