Turner’s first sketches of the town of Thun in 1802 were made in his smaller Lake Thun sketchbook (Tate D04654, D04705; Turner Bequest LXXVI 6, 48). In addition, he drew this more detailed survey of the town and some of its principal buildings, the Rathaus, turreted castle and Protestant church from a closer viewpoint beside the River Aare.
