For views of Rye in this sketchbook see notes to folio 52 verso (D10499; Turner Bequest CXL 46a). The Ypres Tower (now the museum of Rye) stands at the south-east corner of the former town walls; the keep is the only remains of Rye Castle, built by Peter de Savoy. It takes its name from John de Ypres who bought it in 1430. When Turner knew it, it was used as the town prison.
