Here Turner has made a summary sketch of the principal architectural elements of the Porta Nigra, a Roman city gate at Trier, Germany. Seen from a north-westerly angle, there is a far more detailed drawing of the monument taken from the north side on Tate D20141; Turner Bequest CCXVIII 3.
