Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Presumably sketched during some official visit to Richmond or Kew, these vessels dovetail with the triremes and similar ancient shipping and classical embarkation and departure scenes also drawn in this sketchbook. Wilkinson describes them as ‘beautifully limned’ and as adding ‘the right note of pageantry’.
