Turner inverted the sketchbook to make this very slight sketch. With folio17 verso (D04753) – for which see catalogue note for further comment – it formed the basis of the watercolour Chateau de Rinkenberg, on the Lac de Brientz, Switzerland made in 1809 for Walter Fawkes (Taft Museum, Cincinnati),1 and for the intermediate study in the Grenoble series (Tate D04539; Turner Bequest LXXIV 46).
