The sketch, made with the page turned horizontally, is a very quick memorandum, but appears to record the view north towards the Lakeland Hills from the edge of the Kent estuary near Milnthorpe. The lower register of the sketch on Tate D11044; Turner Bequest CXLV 2 records a very similar subject, and similar material is recorded in greater detail in a sketch in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (Tate D11500; Turner Bequest CXLVII 36), which accompanied Turner on the same tour. The present author has dated Turner’s sketches in the Milnthorpe area to Monday 5 August 1816.1
