This view of Tantallon Castle was taken from just west of the headland upon which it stands and is a continuation of a drawing on folio 13 verso (D13607; CLXVII 12a) where we look out to sea towards the Bass Rock. The fourteenth-century castle shows the scars of several sieges and the decay of time with its ruins indicated by serrated lines. This sketchbook contains many further sketches of the castle from various different viewpoints.
