Executed with fluid and gestural handling, here Turner pictures the coastline of a town and turbulent seawaters beyond. The location may be Portsmouth or perhaps Brighton. An expansive and stormy sky is rendered with swift, jerky hatching. This view appears to have been drawn over two existing jottings that were taken with the sketchbook turned vertically.
