This page contains a small thumbnail sketch of a figure wearing a large hat which, according to Turner’s inscription, is ‘purple’. There are a large number of studies of people in this sketchbook and the artist often annotated his drawings with notes on the details and colours of their costume, see for example folio 15 (D16669).
