Turner’s inscription is incorrect unless it merely indicates the road towards Nancy which he took on his way home across France. The subject is not Nancy and its cathedral, but St Nicolas-de-Port as recognised by Maurice Guillaud. The bridge in the foreground crosses the river Meurthe. Turner passed through here on his way to Nancy, for which see folio 11 of this sketchbook (D04746). For another subject nearby, the castle of Blâmont, see folio 9 (D04744).
