Before the building of the terraces of hotels on the cliffs of the north bay at Scarborough, St Mary’s Church (unusual for having its tower at the east end) would have been visible in this aspect from the viewpoint of another sketch in the sequence (D11929; Turner Bequest CL 12). This suggests that the present sketch might be the continuation of D11929 to the right, and that Finberg’s numbering might represent the original pagination of the book at least to some extent.
