This sketch records the view looking north across Scarborough outer harbour from the lighthouse, with the castle cliff beyond left, the outer jetty to the right and the castle wall (rather than the path noted by Finberg) snaking upwards from the far side of the harbour.
Verso:
Blank, except for an inscription by ?John Ruskin in red ink, ‘168. I.’ bottom left. The number is the sketchbook’s Turner Bequest Schedule number. The inscription suggests that the page was removed from the sketchbook, and the number recorded of the sketchbook to which it belonged, probably with some early exhibition at the National Gallery in mind. In the event, the drawing does not appear to have been shown.
