Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Saulieu, a popular posting-stage on the Paris-Lyon road, was Turner’s next stop, some eighteen miles after Avallon (see folios 10–12 of this sketchbook, D04402–D04404). He made just this one sketch, of the main street of the town with its Romanesque basilica.
