This swift and summary pencil sketch depicts a river scene, perhaps a view on the Rhine near the city of Koblenz. Houses and a turreted tower can be seen near the banks at left and in the foreground, a group of moored boats afloat on the still waters. In the middle distance a village is visible, highlighted with the briefest vertical flicks of chalk.
