As Cecilia Powell first identified, this sketch represents part of a panoramic view of Lake Nemi from Genzano looking north to the town of Nemi on the opposite shores. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 10 verso (D15574). Related vistas can be found in the Vatican Fragments sketchbook (Tate D15113; Turner Bequest CLXXX 5) and in the Albano, Nemi, Rome sketchbook (Tate D15334–D15340; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 21a–24a).
