This page contains advice to Turner on travelling in Italy in preparation for the artist’s first tour of the country in 1819. The author of the inscription is James Hakewill (1778–1843), with whom Turner collaborated on the engraved print project, Picturesque Tour of Italy, published 1820 (see the introduction to the sketchbook). The text was first transcribed by Finberg,1 and is repeated here:
Church of Santa Croce for the }
modern monuments –
of the Annunciata for }
the Madonna del Sacco
by Andrea del Sarto.
Wax anatomical preparations.
Manufactory of pierres dures.
The information, continued from folio 11 (D13878), lists sights and points of interest in Florence, including the Churches of Santa Croce and Santissima Annunziata. A cloister of the latter, the Chiostri dei morti, contains the famous fresco, Madonna del Sacco, 1525 by Andrea del Sarto (1486–1531). Hakewill also mentions the famous collection of anatomical waxworks in ‘La Specola’, the Museo di Storia Naturale (Museum of Natural History), and the Opifico della Pietre Dure, manufactory of pietre dure (or pierres dures), hard coloured semi-precious stones for use in inlaid decoration.
Turner visited Florence during his 1819 tour, although it formed part of his return journey from Rome, rather than the outward route recommended by Hakewill. Related sketches can be found in the Rome and Florence sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest CXCI). Hakewill’s notes continue on folio 13 (D13881).
