These mountainous subjects with towers and other buildings, drawn both ways up, are unidentified, but may be in the north of Italy or neighbouring Switzerland; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Finberg tentatively read Turner’s inscription as ‘Landek’,1 which would link the drawing to the town and district of Landeck in the Austrian Tyrol, of which Turner made colour studies in 1840 (Tate D36079, D36085, D36168, D36173 Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 233, 239, 310, 315).
There is another drawing on the recto (D34620; Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 210); the views were made on one half of a folded sheet, with D34622 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 211) opposite the present sketch and D34623 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 211v) on its verso.
Finberg noted: ‘(Nos. [Turner Bequest CCCXLIV] 174–226 were among the contents of a parcel endorsed by Mr. [John] Ruskin, – “B. 2. Forty-eight pieces of paper, some double or 4-ple. Pencil outline, same class as B. 1.”).’2
