Either from a boat in the Tyne, or from South Shields this view of North Shields shows the town with several houses on the quay and the rooftops of the newer part of town on the plateau above. At the left of the town is the High Light, with the town’s other harbour light (the Low Light) shown on folio 14 (D13475) where this sketch continues slightly.
Three thumbnail sketches show details of the town including one of the harbour lights (perhaps the decommissioned old beacon) at the top right and two boxed-off sketches of buildings at the bottom left of the page, drawn with the sketchbook turned to the right.
For more information on Turner’s visit to North and South Shields and his sketches of it, see folio 13 (D13473).
There is a small tear at the centre of the outside edge of the page.
