Turner’s view is from the shore near today’s Warren Road, north of Butlins holiday camp, looking north-west into the mouth of the harbour, with North Hill beyond. On the slope to the left is the tower of St Michael’s Church. The boats in the harbour appear to be those shown from the opposite direction in the Devonshire Coast, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D08732; Turner Bequest CXXIII 202).
The drawing on D08952 (CXXVI 6) appears to be of the hill and coast from inland.
Technical notes:
There are five sets of stitch holes near the left-hand edge.
Verso:
Blank, save for two very slight, short pencil marks, one at the centre left and the other top centre.
