Drawn with the sketchbook inverted and continued on folio 17 (D10361), this careful view is taken from the beach looking across the bay towards the Marine Parade. The foreground is left largely empty, allowing Turner to develop different treatments of shipping and figures in his two watercolours, (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut,1 engraved by George Cooke in 1824 for Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford,2 engraved by Thomas Lupton for The Ports of England but only published in the later Harbours of England, 1856). Margate is one of the subjects, presumably for the Southern Coast, listed inside the front cover of the sketchbook (D40814).
The recto of this leaf is blank but inscribed in blue ink by ?John Ruskin ‘16’ and ‘315’.
