Turner lists towns on the South Coast, the subjects of watercolours and plates engraved by William Bernard Cooke for Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England. These are: ‘Ilfracombe |Tintagel | Torbay Brixham | Bridport | Watchet | Minehead | Lulworth | Margate’.
Noting that Turner delivered watercolours of these subjects to Cooke in 1818, Hill, Warburton and Tussey date this sketchbook and its drawings made in Sussex and Kent to perhaps that year. However, some of these Southern Coast subjects are cited in Cooke’s accounts for 18171 and it is surely possible that the list might comprise subjects still to do for the series rather than ones that were completed. For the dating of the book, see Introduction.
