In the foreground a river leads to a bridge in the distance. A tower with crenellations, another view of which appears in Tate D20329 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 37), stands behind the bridge. Two structures project upwards from the tower’s roof, while its walls are darkened to the left, suggestive of creeping vegetation. Stone buildings stand on either side of the tower. Further in the distance a line of hills forms the horizon.
