The town of Nemi stands on the slopes above the eastern shores of the lake of the same name, approximately eighteen miles south-east of Rome. This sketch represents a view of the town from the north with the circular medieval tower of Castello Ruspoli clearly recognisable. A similar vista can be found on folios 7 verso and 9 (D15568 and D15571). For further related studies and a general discussion of Lake Nemi see folio 7 (D1567).
Eric Shanes has tentatively linked this drawing and another on folio 10 (D15573) with a colour beginning study of a lake and distant palaces (see Tate D36320; Turner Bequest CCCLXV 29).1
