Turner circled the Lake of Albano and made sketches from several different points. This view of the town of Castel Gandolfo from the opposite shore shows the dome of San Tommaso di Villanova and the adjacent buildings of the Pope’s summer villa. The position of the sun low in the sky, casting a rippled reflection on the water below, suggests that he was working at the end of the day as the sun was setting in the west beyond Castel Gandolfo. The view continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 10 verso (D15314).
For a full discussion of Turner’s depictions of Lake Albano see folio 3 verso (D15301) and the general introduction to the sketchbook.
