Hill describes this and other views of the abbey from the bridge over the River Aire, folios 16 and 21 (D07273, D07278), as the ‘most interesting’ in the sketchbook, showing the influence of Turner’s late friend Thomas Girtin who had painted the abbey from the bridge (Victoria and Albert Museum, London).
