This is the continuation to the right of the sketch on folio 5 verso (D11522; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 3a, now bound opposite), recording the view from the Brow, north of Kirkby Lonsdale, looking to the church, churchyard and town, with the houses of Mill Brow falling to the River Lune running away to the left towards Kirkby Lonsdale Bridge, and Ingleborough in the far distance, left. The churchyard is the viewpoint of another sketch on folio 5 recto (D11521; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 3). The octagonal gazebo seen just to the right of centre, still stands at the end of the churchyard, and can also be seen in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (D11088; Turner Bequest CXLV 33a), which shows almost all the same buildings as the present double spread, but as seen from the east. The present writer has dated Turner’s sketches of Kirkby Lonsdale to Friday 9 August and Saturday 10 August 1816.
