Joigny is about halfway between Sens and Auxerre. Turner paused to make two sketches; see also folio 7 of this sketchbook (D04399). This view is taken from beside the River Yonne, with a fishing boat at left, bridge at right, and the church of St Jean and the Château-Neuf visible in the town below the Côte St Jacques.
